How to become a video game tester
Posted on July 20th, 2009 by Jack Wilder (game tester)
Introduction:
Hello my name is Jack Wilder and I am a game tester. I have been doing this for over 10 years now! I would like to introduce myself by showing a picture of my "gaming room" this is the place where I perform my "full time job" as a video game tester.
In this article I would like to teach you how to become a video game tester. Why? Simply because I earn a little extra money that way. I have been testing the latest PC, XBOX, PlAYSATION, GAMECUBE games, and even games for the old-school consoles! Before a game release companies like EA and ROCKSTAR and many others simply sent a copy of the game to my home address to test it ( Which is simply playing the game and playing the game some more). Hold on Hold on you do have to write a review about the game after playing it. You do have to pay attention on the Graphics, Sound, Gameplay, Glitches and overall your gaming experience with the game. It's not just playing games! Well uhm it basically is just playing games but you do have to make sure you keep the game creators happy. Simply to make sure you can keep the job as a game tester.
Some questions you might be interested in:
Q. Why would game creators pay me to beta test games?
A. Simply because the big game companies make a lot of money within the game market. The gaming
industry brings in over $50 billion dollars each year. If a game comes out nation wide with several bugs and an unpleasant gameplay for the user the companies will be losing a lot of money! The hourly rate they are paying the beta game testers is nothing compared to what the company earns.
Q. What kind of video games will I beta testing?
A. This will depend on the companies you are testing games for. The games will be often upcoming
releases! I was one of the first to play Grand theft auto 4, and basically all of the grand theft auto versions starting with the first. This image might look pretty bad compared to the games we are playing now but I just had to post an image of this game, it's a classic! Just to compare it I also placed a picture of grand theft auto 4.
Q. Will I be testing games on the XBOX 360, PS3, PSP, Nintendo DS, Gameboy, etc?
A. This depends on the game testing jobs you apply for. You are able to apply for all the systems but this might be taking up a lot of your time. When I was younger I tested games for pretty much all
the systems out there now I am only testing games for the XBOX 360 and sometimes a few games for the PS3.
